It’s true that this article is a little self-serving, given that I run a business which sells online CLE to lawyers.
However, let’s get past that and hopefully accept that I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t think it offered some benefit to the recipients.
Don’t worry – in person CLE has some benefits too, and I’ll write about those another time. But for now let’s explore why continuing legal education can be well served up by an online provider… assuming it’s done right.
Online CLE is Repeatable
You know that gem statement that someone made at the seminar about the thing?
That’s because you’ve forgotten it – it happened in a flurry, and you knew it was awesome, but you’re never getting that back.
Online CLE offers (usually) the ability to revisit your lessons and check what was said, analyse and refresh.
It’s More Flexible
Let’s face it – giving up your lunch hour to compulsory CLE that your firm puts on for you isn’t usually very fun.
Rarely, the CLE is worth the sacrifice.
The great thing about online CLE, fairly obviously, is that you can view it:
- in your lunch break
- on the way home
- in work time (I know – crazy, right? Fancy doing work things during work time…)
- whenever you are going to learn best.
Generally speaking, with an in-person seminar it’s a bit… quick.
If you manage to get through it, learn something useful and try to implement it into your practice, but still have questions – what do you do?
You do nothing. Because that person is long gone, and you’re left on your own.
Not so with online courses (at least, the ones I do here) – they come with support and the ability to interact along the way as you try to put the skills or knowledge you learn into the real world.
Online CLE Has Updates
Although it’s not always the case, many online CLE programs keep themselves up to date.
With in-person CLE of course, you can’t expect an upgrade or an update should things change after you’ve listened.
Updates are awesome.
I love updates – they get me interested again in what I learned the first time!
How often have you been in a seminar, a lecture or a thing that’s supposed to give you CLE points only to find that an urgent message or call comes in?
Yeah – me too.
With Online CLE of course you can pause things – take the call, deal with the issue, and get back to it.
No fuss (I mean – it’s not like I’m standing their frozen in position impatiently waiting for you to return…).
Tracking your Progress
When things get busy, sometimes you forget to jot things down.
But most (probably not all) online CLE allows you to track your progress so you know where you’re up to and what you still have to do.
Which means that it’s easy to know where you’ve been, what you’ve learned, and to give your memory a little jog to provoke you into some kind of action about it (which is what good CLE should do).
